How to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids
One of the first questions often asked when one discovers that one has a hemorrhoid is, “How to get rid of hemorrhoids?” There are several options available over-the-counter and at your physician’s office. If you want to try an over-the-counter remedy this usually includes cortisone to shrink the swollen tissue or witch hazel which does the same thing. A physician can prescribe a cortisone crème if an over-the-counter crème is not working, or a referral to a specialist if warranted which can sometimes involve surgery.
How to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids : Tips
So, short of surgery and a doctor’s office visit what can you do at home? Start by keeping the area clean. After every bowel movement use a baby wipe that is free from perfumes and dyes or a tissue that has lotion embedded in it. The wipe provides a cooling relief and can make wiping the area less painful. There are hemorrhoid pads available, on the market, that contain witch hazel and these can be used to wipe the affected area as well. Hemorrhoids often prove embarrassing but they are, unfortunately, a natural part of life.
Increasing the fiber in your diet will also help, as straining and pushing often create the swollen tissues. Increasing the water in your diet will also help with softening the stool. With adequate fiber and water intake this should assist in solving the problem of difficulty having a bowel movement and relieving some of the symptoms and causes of hemorrhoids and hopefully the need to treat the symptoms.
At Home Hemorrhoids Relief
Washing at least three times a day and/or soaking your bottom in cool water can help clean the area, reduce swelling and relieve your pain. Witch hazel is an excellent way to provide cooling relief and shrink the area almost immediately providing pain relief from swollen and sore tissues. Keeping in mind that hemorrhoids are swollen veins, cooling the witch hazel will also contribute significantly to reducing the swelling.
Vitamin E and aloe gel are excellent alternatives to cortisone crèmes. For vitamin E you will have to open the capsule. You can puncture the end of the capsule with a pin or needle and apply the oil directly from the capsule or use a cotton tipped swab. Vitamin E is the supplement usually used when needed to help your skin repair itself from sunburn or chapped lips and will, when taken orally, help maintain skin’s health. Aloe gel will work in the exact same way as vitamin E minus the easy measured dose of the capsule. Place a pea size amount on your finger, or cotton tipped swab, and apply to the swollen tissue. If you have to go to work (and most of us do) then vitamin E may be the way to go, since you can transport a capsule a lot easier and more discretely.
If you sit for long periods of time this can increase your risk of getting a hemorrhoid so make sure you take a small walking break during your day when you are working. Frequent trips to the water cooler for that, as mentioned, increase in water intake are always good. Of course that means frequent trips to the bathroom but then again the idea is move throughout the day to decrease your sitting time and your hemorrhoid risk. If the symptoms do not resolve within a week or so schedule a doctor’s appointment to make sure nothing more severe is creating hemorrhoids or hemorrhoid like symptoms. Make sure to ask the all-important question, “How to get rid of hemorrhoids?”
